Grand Hyatt Kaua’i: The Classic Kaua’i Resort That Does Everything Well

Kauaʻi is the kind of island that makes you want to spend as much time outside your hotel as you do inside it. There are dramatic coastlines to hike, waterfalls to discover, beaches to explore, and some of the most magnificent scenery in Hawaiʻi.

But there is something to be said for choosing a resort that makes staying in just as tempting.

Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi Resort & Spa is one of those properties.

Set along Kauaʻi's sunny southern coast in Poʻipū, the Grand Hyatt is a sprawling oceanfront resort with lush tropical grounds, an enormous pool complex, a saltwater lagoon, several restaurants, the beautiful Anara Spa, and easy access to some of the South Shore's best experiences.

I had the opportunity to tour the Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi in person, and what stood out to me most was its versatility.

This isn't a tiny, secluded honeymoon hideaway, nor is it trying to be. Instead, it is the kind of resort that can work remarkably well for honeymooners, families, multigenerational trips, anniversary getaways, and first-time visitors to Kauaʻi.

Here's what I would want my clients to know before booking it.

The Location: Staying in Poʻipū

The Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi sits directly along Shipwreck Beach in the Poʻipū area on Kauaʻi's South Shore. The location puts guests near Poʻipū Bay Golf Course, the Mahaʻulepu Heritage Trail, beaches, restaurants, and many of the experiences that make this part of Kauaʻi so appealing.

One important distinction, however, is the beach.

Shipwreck Beach creates a gorgeous setting for the resort, but I wouldn't choose the Grand Hyatt specifically for calm ocean swimming. Conditions can be rough, and there are better beaches nearby when getting into the ocean is your priority.

What you get in exchange is an expansive oceanfront setting and one of the most impressive resort pool areas in Hawaiʻi.

And that is where the Grand Hyatt really begins to differentiate itself.

The Pools Are One of the Biggest Reasons to Stay Here

If a great pool is high on your hotel wish list, the Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi deserves serious consideration.

The resort's sprawling pool complex winds through its tropical grounds with a lava-rock lazy river, waterfalls, a 150-foot waterslide, multiple swimming areas, and a saltwater lagoon.

The landscaping makes the entire area feel much more integrated into the resort than a traditional rectangular hotel pool. Palms, gardens, pathways, and water features create different pockets throughout the property, so despite the Grand Hyatt's size, there are still places to settle in for a quieter afternoon.

For families, the lazy river, lagoon, and waterslide are obvious advantages.

For couples, the scale of the pool complex means you aren't necessarily spending your honeymoon surrounded by children's activities all day.

This balance is one of the biggest reasons I think the property works for such a wide range of travelers.

Is Grand Club Access Worth It?

Grand Club access is one upgrade I would price out before making a final decision.

Club-level accommodations can provide access to a private lounge with food and beverages served at different points throughout the day. The resort currently describes Grand Club access as including offerings such as breakfast, snacks, and evening hors d'oeuvres.

For the right traveler, that can add meaningful convenience.

Families may appreciate having easy access to breakfast and snacks without organizing another restaurant meal every time someone gets hungry.

Couples may like having somewhere to stop for a quick breakfast before heading out to explore the island or for something small before dinner.

Whether it is worth the additional cost depends entirely on the rate difference for your dates, so this is something I would compare rather than automatically book.

What Are the Rooms Like at Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi?

Rooms at Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi are generously sized, with standard accommodations measuring around 500 square feet and featuring private furnished lanais. Depending on category, views range from the gardens and resort grounds to partial ocean and full ocean views.

The room itself wouldn't be my primary reason for choosing this hotel. You're paying for the entire resort experience, and I think your room category should reflect how much time you actually plan to spend there.

For a family that expects to spend most of the day exploring Kauaʻi or at the pool, I wouldn't necessarily prioritize the highest view category.

For a honeymoon or anniversary, I would.

Which Room Category Would I Book?

For couples, I generally recommend at least a Partial Ocean View, with Ocean View worth considering when the price difference makes sense.

There's something different about waking up on your honeymoon, opening the doors to your lanai, and actually seeing the Pacific.

For families, I would be more willing to put that budget toward experiences, a longer stay, or additional space rather than automatically upgrading for the view.

And if you are considering a suite, there are several significantly larger accommodations, including one-bedroom options with ocean views.

Dining at Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi

Another advantage of staying here is that you don't have to leave the property every time you want a good meal or drink.

The resort currently has several dining options ranging from casual poolside food to a more romantic dinner.

Tidepools

If you're celebrating a honeymoon or anniversary, Tidepools is the restaurant I would prioritize.

The open-air restaurant sits in thatched-roof bungalows over a koi-filled lagoon and focuses on seafood, steaks, and island-inspired cuisine.

The setting is the real draw. It feels distinctly tropical and makes for an easy special-occasion dinner without leaving the resort.

Stevenson's Library

For sushi and cocktails, Stevenson's Library has a completely different atmosphere.

The lounge centers around an impressive hand-carved koa wood bar and offers sushi alongside sake, whiskey, cognac, and cocktails.

I particularly like this option for couples who want somewhere to have a drink after dinner without needing transportation back to the hotel.

ʻIlima Terrace

ʻIlima Terrace is the more casual daytime option and serves breakfast and lunch in an open-air setting surrounded by the resort's gardens, waterfalls, and koi ponds.

Seaview Terrace

For something less structured, Seaview Terrace is an easy place to settle in with a cocktail and enjoy the oceanfront atmosphere. The resort also features live Hawaiian entertainment here in the evenings.

The benefit of the Grand Hyatt's dining lineup isn't necessarily that you'll want to eat every meal at the resort. Kauaʻi has plenty worth leaving the property for.

It's that on nights when you don't want to go anywhere, you have options.

One part of the property that shouldn't get lost among the pools and restaurants is Anara Spa.

The spa spans approximately 45,000 square feet and incorporates tropical gardens and open-air elements into the experience. Treatments include massages, facials, body treatments, and other wellness services, with additional facilities including a sauna, steam room, fitness center, yoga space, and lap pool.

For honeymooners, I would consider building a spa treatment into one of your slower resort days rather than trying to squeeze it between excursions.

Kauaʻi lends itself beautifully to balancing adventure with relaxation, and the Grand Hyatt makes that combination particularly easy.

Who Is Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi Best For?

This is where I think the hotel becomes especially interesting.

Honeymooners

I would recommend Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi for honeymooners who want romance without sacrificing resort amenities.

You can have the ocean-view room, couples spa treatment, romantic dinner at Tidepools, and beautiful tropical setting while still having multiple pools, restaurants, bars, and plenty happening around the resort.

If your dream honeymoon is an intimate boutique hotel where you barely see another guest, this isn't it.

But if you want luxury, beautiful surroundings, plenty of amenities, and an excellent base for exploring Kauaʻi, it can be a superb choice.

Families

This is one of the easiest recommendations on Kauaʻi for families who prioritize resort amenities.

The pools alone give children plenty to do, while the spacious rooms and multiple dining options make the logistics of traveling as a family easier.

More importantly, it doesn't feel like a resort designed only for families. Adults can still enjoy the spa, golf, restaurants, cocktails, and quieter areas of the property.

Multigenerational Trips

The Grand Hyatt is also particularly strong for multigenerational travel because different travelers can have completely different vacations without staying at different hotels.

One person can spend the morning golfing at neighboring Poʻipū Bay Golf Course, someone else can book a spa treatment, the kids can spend hours at the pools, and everyone can meet for dinner afterward. The resort sits adjacent to the 18-hole Poʻipū Bay Golf Course.

That flexibility is difficult to replicate at smaller properties.

Who Might Not Love It?

No hotel is right for everyone, and I think this is particularly important when evaluating a resort as large as the Grand Hyatt.

I would look elsewhere if your top priority is an ultra-private boutique experience, an adults-only atmosphere, or a hotel where you can walk out the front door and immediately have a large selection of independent restaurants and shops around you.

The property is expansive. For some travelers, that is exactly the appeal.

For others, something smaller and quieter will feel more special.

Knowing which type of traveler you are matters more than whether a hotel is objectively considered "luxurious."

Is Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi Good for a Honeymoon?

Yes, for the right couple.

I wouldn't automatically call it the most romantic hotel on Kauaʻi because romance means different things to different travelers.

What it does exceptionally well is combine a beautiful tropical setting with enough amenities that you can dedicate entire days to enjoying the resort.

For honeymooners, I would prioritize an upgraded view category, make a dinner reservation at Tidepools, consider Grand Club access depending on the price, and set aside at least one day where absolutely nothing is scheduled.

Then use the remaining days to experience why you came to Kauaʻi in the first place.

How Long Should You Stay?

For most travelers, I like four to six nights on Kauaʻi.

That gives you enough time to experience the island without feeling like every day needs to be packed with activities.

A honeymoon might include a boat trip along the Nā Pali Coast, a helicopter tour, hiking, a luau or cultural experience, and plenty of time simply enjoying the resort.

Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi also works beautifully as part of a multi-island Hawaiʻi honeymoon. Pairing Kauaʻi with Maui, for example, gives couples two very different island experiences within one trip.

My Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi Review

After seeing the resort in person, I understand why Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi has remained such a popular choice on the island.

Is it the newest or most intimate luxury resort in Hawaiʻi? No.

But that isn't really its strength.

Its strength is how much it does well.

The grounds are lush and gorgeous. The pool complex is exceptional. Rooms are spacious. There is enough dining to make resort days easy. Anara Spa gives couples somewhere to truly slow down. Families have plenty to do. And its Poʻipū location makes it a convenient home base for exploring Kauaʻi's South Shore.

For travelers who want a resort that feels special without being overly formal, Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi remains one of my favorite all-around options on the Garden Isle.
