How to Get VIP Hotel Perks and Upgrades on Your Next Luxury Vacation
Two travelers can book the same room at the same luxury hotel for the same dates and arrive to two very different experiences.
One checks in, receives their room key, and begins their vacation.
The other may arrive to find a welcome amenity waiting in their room, enjoy complimentary breakfast each morning, receive a hotel credit to use during their stay, and potentially be prioritized for a room upgrade or early check-in.
The difference is not always elite hotel status or spending more on the room.
Sometimes, it is simply how the hotel was booked.
Luxury hotels around the world participate in preferred partner programs and maintain relationships with travel advisors that can provide clients with additional benefits and recognition. Yet many travelers book directly online without realizing these opportunities exist.
If you are already investing in an exceptional hotel, understanding how these benefits work can make that investment considerably more valuable.
Here is what you should know before booking your next luxury stay.
What Are Luxury Hotel VIP Perks?
Luxury hotel perks are additional benefits that may be included with eligible reservations booked through select travel advisors, preferred partner programs, hotel programs, or certain premium credit card platforms.
The exact benefits vary by hotel and program, but they can include:
Complimentary daily breakfast
$100 hotel, resort, dining, or spa credits
Priority for room upgrades, subject to availability
Early check-in, subject to availability
Late checkout, subject to availability
Welcome amenities
Complimentary Wi-Fi
Additional property-specific benefits
VIP recognition from the hotel
At a luxury property, these benefits can quickly become meaningful.
Breakfast for two at a five-star resort could easily cost $80 to $150 each morning. Add a $100 property credit and the value of the benefits during a five-night stay can reach several hundred dollars before even considering a potential room upgrade.
But focusing exclusively on the dollar amount misses part of the appeal.
The real value is often in how the stay feels.
The Secret Is Often How You Book the Hotel
One of the most common misconceptions I hear is that booking directly with a hotel is always the best way to reserve a luxury property.
That is not necessarily the case.
Many of the world's leading hotel brands and independent luxury hotels participate in preferred partner programs designed specifically for select travel agencies and advisors.
These programs can allow an advisor to reserve an eligible stay while attaching additional benefits to the reservation.
In many cases, you are still staying in the exact hotel and room category you were already considering. The difference is that your reservation may now include benefits and additional recognition that would not have been attached to a standard online booking.
At Aurelia Voyages, I have access to an extensive collection of luxury hotel programs and partnerships, which means one of the first things I look at when booking a hotel is not simply:
"What does this room cost?"
I also want to know:
"What can I add to this stay?"
That distinction can make a significant difference.
Complimentary Breakfast Is More Valuable Than It Sounds
Breakfast may not sound like the most exciting luxury travel benefit until you experience it at a five-star resort.
Instead of starting every morning by deciding whether you want to spend another $100 on breakfast, you can order what you actually want and enjoy a slow morning before beginning the day.
At some properties, the benefit may be available through the hotel's restaurant. At others, it could include room service or a daily breakfast credit.
Over a weeklong stay, complimentary breakfast for two can represent hundreds of dollars in value.
More importantly, it changes the experience.
There is something wonderfully indulgent about waking up at a beautiful resort, ordering breakfast overlooking the ocean, and knowing it is already part of your stay.
Hotel and Resort Credits Give You More Freedom to Enjoy the Property
Many preferred hotel programs include a property credit, often around $100 per stay, although the amount and permitted uses vary.
Depending on the hotel, that credit might be used toward:
Spa treatments
Lunch or dinner
Cocktails by the pool
Room service
Resort activities
Other hotel experiences
Rather than viewing the credit simply as a discount, I like to think of it as an invitation to enjoy more of the property.
Maybe it covers cocktails before dinner.
Maybe you put it toward a massage.
Maybe you order lunch by the pool without thinking twice.
When you are staying somewhere exceptional, the hotel itself is part of the vacation. These benefits give you another reason to enjoy it.
Can a Travel Advisor Really Get You a Room Upgrade?
Potentially, yes, but this is one area where expectations matter.
Many preferred partner programs include room upgrades based on availability, typically determined by the hotel.
That means an upgrade should never be considered guaranteed unless it is explicitly confirmed as part of your reservation.
However, an eligible preferred reservation may give you priority for an upgrade when the hotel has availability.
What that upgrade looks like varies considerably.
It could mean a room on a higher floor, a better view, a larger room, or movement into the next eligible room category.
At certain properties and during less busy travel periods, the upgrade can be particularly meaningful. During holidays or extremely high-demand dates, availability may be much tighter.
This is also why I never recommend booking a room category you would be unhappy receiving.
Consider an upgrade a wonderful possibility, not something your vacation depends upon.
Early Check-In and Late Checkout Can Completely Change a Travel Day
These benefits receive far less attention than room upgrades, but they can sometimes be even more useful.
Imagine arriving in Hawaii after a long flight at noon when standard hotel check-in is not until 4:00 p.m.
Or perhaps your flight home from Europe leaves in the evening, but hotel checkout is at 11:00 a.m.
Early check-in and late checkout can transform those awkward travel days.
Like upgrades, availability varies by hotel and preferred program, and these benefits are not always guaranteed.
But having a travel advisor communicate your arrival and departure details gives the property an opportunity to accommodate the request when possible.
And that brings us to a benefit that cannot be summarized on a rate sheet.
The Most Memorable Perks Are Sometimes the Ones You Cannot Buy
Some of my favorite hotel experiences for clients have nothing to do with a published benefit.
When I know clients are celebrating something special, I communicate that information to the hotel.
A honeymoon.
An anniversary.
A milestone birthday.
A graduation trip.
A surprise engagement.
Or simply a vacation they have been looking forward to for months.
I can also share relevant preferences and details with hotel partners before arrival.
Depending on the property, occasion, and team, a hotel may choose to recognize guests with a thoughtful welcome or special touch.
These gestures are always at the hotel's discretion and should never be expected or guaranteed.
But this is where relationships matter.
There is a meaningful difference between arriving as a reservation number and arriving at a hotel where the team knows who you are, why you are visiting, and that someone has taken the time to advocate for your stay.
The best luxury experiences feel personal.
That is something no online booking engine can replicate particularly well.
Do You Have to Pay More to Receive Travel Advisor Hotel Perks?
Not necessarily.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding luxury travel advisors.
At many participating hotels, I can book an eligible preferred rate that is comparable to the hotel's publicly available flexible rate while adding valuable benefits to the reservation.
There are circumstances where another rate may be less expensive. A prepaid, nonrefundable promotion, member rate, package, or limited-time offer might have a lower headline price.
But the lowest number on the booking screen does not always represent the best overall value.
Imagine one rate is $50 less per night, but another includes daily breakfast for two, a $100 hotel credit, potential upgrade priority, and additional flexibility.
Which is actually the better reservation?
That depends on the trip.
My job is to look beyond the nightly rate and help determine which option gives you the best combination of price, benefits, flexibility, and experience.
What About Credit Card Luxury Hotel Programs?
Premium credit cards can also provide valuable hotel benefits, and for some stays they are an excellent option.
The important thing to understand is that there is no single booking channel that is automatically best for every hotel.
A credit card program might offer excellent benefits at one property. A hotel's own preferred partner program might be stronger at another. There may also be a special hotel offer that makes an entirely different rate more attractive.
This is where having someone compare the options becomes useful. When I evaluate a luxury hotel stay, I am not interested in forcing every reservation through the same program.
I want to determine which booking strategy makes the most sense for that particular stay.
There is a meaningful difference between arriving as a reservation number and arriving at a hotel where the team knows who you are.
Not Every Hotel Qualifies for VIP Benefits
Preferred hotel benefits are not universal.
Hotels participate in specific programs, and benefits vary by brand, property, destination, rate, and reservation.
That means you should never assume that every five-star hotel comes with complimentary breakfast, a property credit, and an upgrade simply because you booked through a travel advisor.
Before booking, I look at the specific property and available rates to determine what benefits, if any, can be included.
Sometimes the preferred benefits are exceptional.
Sometimes a special promotion is more valuable.
Sometimes the hotel I initially considered is not the one I ultimately recommend.
That is part of the advantage of approaching hotel selection strategically rather than simply choosing whichever property appears first in a search.
When Should You Use a Travel Advisor to Book a Hotel?
The more important the hotel is to your vacation, the more valuable it becomes to have someone evaluate the booking.
I particularly recommend checking with a luxury travel advisor when:
You are booking a five-star or luxury hotel
You are staying several nights at an expensive resort
You are traveling for a honeymoon or anniversary
You are celebrating a milestone
You are planning a luxury family vacation
The hotel itself is a major part of the experience
You are considering multiple room categories and are unsure which is worthwhile
You want to know whether additional benefits are available
You simply want someone to make sure you are booking the stay intelligently
You have already decided to invest in a beautiful hotel.
You might as well make that reservation work as hard as possible for you.
Luxury Is in the Details
There is a reason the world's best hotels obsess over details.
How you are greeted.
Whether someone remembers your name.
What is waiting in your room.
Where you drink your morning coffee.
How effortlessly a request is handled.
None of these moments alone defines a vacation, but together they create the feeling we associate with exceptional hospitality.
That is also how I approach hotel bookings at Aurelia Voyages.
I am not simply looking for somewhere beautiful for you to sleep.
I want to know whether the hotel fits the trip, whether there is a better room category worth considering, what benefits I can add, what the property should know about you before you arrive, and whether there are opportunities to make the experience feel a little more special.
Because when you are investing in luxury travel, the details should feel luxurious too.
Planning a Luxury Vacation?
If you are considering a luxury hotel for an upcoming trip, you do not have to navigate every rate, room category, benefit, and booking option yourself.
Through Aurelia Voyages, I can help you find the right property, determine the best way to book it, access eligible preferred partner benefits, and communicate with the hotel ahead of your arrival.
For travelers looking for a fully planned vacation, I can also take care of the larger picture, from hotels and transportation to private experiences, dining recommendations, and the details that bring the entire trip together.
