When it comes to Maui resorts, location can completely shape the experience. And a few locations are as iconic as Black Rock.

Located at the northern end of Kā’anapali Beach, Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa sits on one of the most scenic stretches of coastline on the island.

During my recent visit to the property, it became immediately clear why this resort remains so popular with travelers:

  • Incredible snorkeling directly off the beach

  • Sweeping ocean views

  • Walkable access to restaurants and shopping

  • Classic Maui resort atmosphere

For many visitors, it delivers the quintessential Maui beach experience.

Black Rock: Maui’s Most Famous Snorkeling Spot

The defining feature of Sheraton Maui is its location beside Pu’u Kek’a, commonly known as Black Rock.

This volcanic rock formation extends into the ocean and creates one of the best snorkeling areas in West Maui. Guests often see sea turtles, tropical reef fish, and clear coral formations.

Because the reef sits right offshore, you can walk directly from the beach into the water and start snorkeling. For many guests, this becomes a daily ritual during their stay.

The Cliff Diving Ceremony

Every evening at sunset, the resort hosts a traditional cliff diving ceremony honoring Maui’s last ruling chief, Kahekili. A diver lights torches along the rock before diving from the top into the ocean below.

It’s a beautiful tradition that adds cultural significance to the setting and has become one of the resort’s most recognizable experiences. Watching the ceremony with the sunset over the Pacific is unforgettable.

The Resort Layout

The resort includes approximately 500 guest rooms spread across multiple buildings, giving the property a spacious feel even when occupancy is high. Many room feature:

  • Private lanais

  • Ocean or garden views

  • Large windows overlooking Kā’anapali Beach

  • Comfortable, classic island design

Because the resort sits directly beside Black Rock, many rooms offer spectacular oceanfront perspectives. Even partial ocean view rooms can deliver incredible sunset views.

Pool & Beach Experience

The main pool area is centered around a lagoon-style pool with a large sundeck, plenty of lounge seating, and a nearby shallow pool for children.

Unlike some Maui resorts, Sheraton Maui doesn’t focus heavily on elaborate water features or slides.

Instead, the real highlight is the beach itself. Kā,anapali Beach is consistently ranked among the best beaches in Hawai’i thanks to its:

  • Wide sandy shoreline

  • Calm swimmable water

  • Excellent snorkeling

  • Beautiful sunset views

Guests can easily spend the entire day alternating between the beach and pool.

Dining at the Resort

The resort offers several dining options, including oceanfront restaurants and casual beachside dining. Guests can enjoy fresh seafood, Hawaiian-inspired cuisine, and sunset cocktails overlooking the ocean.

Because the resort sits on Kā,anapali Beach, guests also have easy walking access to Whalers Village, which offers additional restaurants, shopping, and entertainment just down the beach path.

This walkability is one of the biggest advantages of staying in Kā’anapali compared to to more secluded areas of Maui.

Cultural Activities & Experiences

During my tour of the property, I also learned about some of the cultural experiences offered on-site. These include activities such as:

  • Lei making demonstrations

  • Cultural storytelling

  • Hawaiian craft experiences

These activities help guests connect more deeply with the history and culture of the islands.

Not Ideal For:

How It Compares to Other Maui Resorts

Many clients consider Sheraton Maui alongside resorts in Wailea or Kapalua. Each area offers a different experience.

Wailea resorts are more upscale luxury, quieter atmosphere. Kapalua resorts are more secluded and nature-focused. While Kā’anapali resorts are more walkable, lively, and beach-centered.

Sheraton Maui fits beautifully into the Kā’anapali resort area.

My Advisor Take

After seeing the property firsthand, the biggest strength of Sheraton Maui is simple, the location is incredible.

Black Rock snorkeling, sunset views, and Kā’anapali Beach all combine to create a classic Maui experience. For travelers who prioritize beach access and walkability, it can be an excellent choice.

And when I book clients here through preferred travel advisor programs, they may also receive additional perks like:

  • Room upgrades priority

  • Resort credits

  • Early check-in or late checkout when avaiable

These small touches can make a meaningful different during the stay.
